Săvârșin Castle
Săvârşin Castle is located in Romania in the Săvârşin municipality in Arad County in the Banat region .
history
The castle was built by the Hungarian aristocratic Forray family in the 17th century between 1650 and 1680. Previously, Baron Andreas Forray had the 6.5 hectare park with a lake laid out in 1514. Most of the structure was destroyed during the Horea Uprising in Transylvania in 1784. The rebels around Peter Baciu kidnapped the owner Andras Forray (senior) on June 9, 1784. Emperor Josef II then bought him free. In 1870 the structure was given its current appearance. Until 1932, the castle was owned by Carol Hunyady. It then became the property of the Corvin company. In 1943 King Michael I became the owner of the castle. He acquired the shares from the main shareholder Anton Mocioni. The castle was nationalized on December 30, 1947, after the king abdicated. Later the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu used it as a hunting seat. On June 1, 2001, the property and the castle were returned to the royal family.
