Senftenegg Castle

Senftenegg Castle is elevated to the northeast above the hamlet of Senftenegg in the market town of Ferschnitz in the Amstetten district in Lower Austria .

history

It was first mentioned in a document in 1367. In 1797 the castle went to the Counts of Starhemberg . The regularly four-sided two-storey complex was built in the second half of the 16th century.

architecture

In the middle of the southern front is a half-set rectangular gate tower with the access bridge over the weir ditch and two round towers with pointed helmets . The medieval former dungeon was not recognizable integrated into the northeast corner on the exterior. The northern part was expanded in the 18th century .

In the courtyard, over arched pillar niches on two sides, cross -arched upper storey arcades on truncated pillars with cover plates . In the western arcade, there are exposed remains of a wall painting with tracery chunks. The wall fountain in the courtyard has a spout with a mannerist mask .

The wide gate passage has a needle cap barrel with plastered ridges from the second half of the 16th century and there are still some needle cap barrel vaults on the upper floor. On the ground floor of the east wing there is a rectangular groin vaulted chapel room of St. Anthony of Padua, which was renovated in 1854.

In addition to genealogical wall paintings from the 20th century, a rich library and an archive , the remains of a moat , some of which is filled with water , have been preserved outside the castle .
