Stjärnsund Castle is a magnificent building in the Swedish municipality of Askersund in the province of Närke .

The castle is located on a high headland between Lake Alsen and a waterway that connects this lake with Lake Vättern . The building was built between 1798 and 1801 based on drawings by the architect Carl Fredrik Sundvall in the neo-antique style customary at the time. The main building has two floors and a lower administration floor. In the middle there is a protruding part in the shape of a prostyle with four pillars resting on a raised stone staircase.

The castle is part of an estate that was created in 1637 by Johan Gabrielsson Oxenstierna by amalgamating several smaller pieces of land. The property continued to grow through purchase and exchange and temporarily comprised a large part of the parishes of Askersund and Hammar. In the following years the estate changed hands between different noble families before it was sold to King Karl XIV. Johann in 1823 . The royal administrator let the castle fall into disrepair, but after Oskar I had sold it to his second-born Franz Gustav in 1851 , major repairs were carried out under the direction of PA Nyström. Prince Franz Gustav was musically gifted and according to various reports he composed some of his famous songs at the castle. After the prince's early death, Oskar I sold the estate to his fifth child August , who in turn sold it to the Cassel family.

In 1951 the castle was given by will to the Royal Swedish Academy of Learning, History and Antiques , which is to preserve it as a cultural monument. Since 1965 it has been classified as Byggnadsminne . The castle is open to visitors in summer. There is also a wagon museum, a dairy and a café.

The estate is the parent farm for the Swedish red cattle breed .
