Family coat of arms of the Mosheim family

The records of the "old castle" with the tower and church of Sankt Michael go back to the year 1150, the land register of the vicarage and Kapuzinerstöckl to the 16th century.

In the first half of the 14th century, the Lords of Wildon gave Eckbert von Thann several estates in the Sölk. It is possible that he was already beginning to develop the farm into a noble residence. However, he in turn passed the property on to Amelreich von Sankt Michael as an after-fief . In 1346 his widow sold the farm to the Bishop of Chiemsee , whereby Eckbert von Thann renounced his feudal sovereignty.

In 1369, Markwart von Thanpeck, who was a judge in Admont , appears as the owner of the castle. At that time this was already called Thanneck. In order to raise the Turkish tax , in 1529 the Bishop of Chiemsee sold the "Seat of St. Michael" to Bartholomäus von Moosheim . His grandson Benedict began expanding the castle in the late 16th century. Two side wings, the rectory and the Kapuzinerstöckl were added to the old castle.

The pastor's apartment and a school were located in the rectory of Thannegg Castle, across from the Church of St. Michael.

Towards the end of the 16th century, a chalk fire station was set up in the castle . The high costs for building the palace, but also the severe storms that destroyed the harvests several times between 1567 and 1580, led to the financial decline of the Lords of Moosheim. Thannegg was therefore first pledged to Johanna von Rorbach in 1599 and finally sold to Achatz Hagen zu Niederdorf . Since he could not pay the purchase price, the Moosheimers took the property back and finally sold it in 1642 to Franz Schörkhmayr, a citizen of Gröbming. As the last Lutheran aristocrats of the Ennstal, you yourself had to leave the country beforehand . One of the descendants was Johann Lorenz von Mosheim . Franz Schörkhmayr's son of the same name sold Thannegg in 1671 to Count Peter Bonaventura von Crollolanza .

In 1777 Karl Graf von Stainach acquired the property, which he had managed from his Stainach Castle . By way of a public auction, Moosheim was transferred to Count Alois Khuenburg in 1810 . In 1819 Franz Ritter von Friedau acquired the castle, which was soon followed by numerous owners.

In 1911 it was acquired by the Michaelerberg community and used as a poor house . In the first quarter of the 20th century, the building was almost in ruins. The noble, but only short-term owners, Count Charles Henry Bardeau (1919) and Prince Colloredo (1929), could not change this either. In 1941 the municipality of Michaelerberg, which had acquired the old castle again in 1933, partially demolished it and used the stones for road construction. In 1984/85 the current owners, Ernst and Gerlinde Schrempf, acquired the almost uninhabitable ruin, revitalized the walls and transformed Thannegg Castle in Moosheim into a castle hotel.

Classification in terms of building history

The predominantly three-story building is kept quite simple. Its only structural adornment is a bay window protruding above the entrance gate. The remains of Renaissance sgraffito decorations have been preserved in the courtyard. The individual wings of the building are provided with crooked roofs.

Due to the temporary use as a poor house, little of the former interior has been preserved. The castle had to be re-adapted and furnished for use as a hotel. During excavation work in 2002/03, a vault dating from 1150 was uncovered in the basement. The original stone floor came to light again.

Immediately next to the castle is the small late Romanesque St. Michael's Church , which served as the castle church. It shows a round apse and early Gothic windows. The fragment of the Moosheim family tree on the back of the altar is of genealogical interest.
