The palace complex was built by Ernst von Honrodt in 1555 with a rectangular palace courtyard, which included residential and auxiliary buildings. The two-storey main building represents the north wing. The complex was surrounded by a moat. The mighty castle tower on the southeast corner of the manor house has three floors. Its flying buttress spans the moat. Various inscription stones are attached to the building facade, which point to the story. This includes a stone with the von Honrodt coat of arms. A stone with the inscription Ernst von Honrode anno 1555 indicates the castle renovation and a stone from 1579 could have been set for the year the corner tower was built.

Two sandstone plaques on the main building indicate that it was built by Ernst von Honrode in 1564 and 1565. There is a park on the north side of the castle.

history

The Veltheim moated castle, which was probably built in the 12th century, goes back to the von Veltheim family, first mentioned in a document in 1160 . In 1430 the castle was severely destroyed by the citizens of Brunswick who fought to prevent their trade routes to the east. Around 1494 the destroyed castle was sold to the von Honrodt family. In 1537 Ernst von Honrodt was enfeoffed by Brunswick Duke Heinrich the Younger with the castle, the court, the church patronage and the forests. In 1555 he redesigned the moated castle into a palace. When the von Honrodt family went out in 1814, the Veltheim family bought back their ancestral estate in 1832. She was now based in Bartensleben near Helmstedt . Today the farmer and landowner Alexander von Veltheim is mayor of the community.
