history

In 786 Wiehe was first mentioned in a document. In 998 Wiehe was granted city rights, and the imperial castle, built in the 10th century, belonged to the North Thuringian imperial estate , like the Palatinate Memleben . A ergrabener square keep and the remains of the curtain wall date back to 1200. In the 13th century the castle came to the Count of Käfernburg -Schwarzburg.

In 1461 Dietrich von Werthern acquired the rule Wiehe with the castle Wiehe, the Gut Lossa and the associated patronage over the monastery Donndorf from Count Heinrich von Schwarzburg .

In 1659 a large fire destroyed the town hall, the church and the outer bailey as well as town houses. From 1664 to 1666 the Lords of Werthern built the palace in the late Renaissance style instead of the castle.

After 1945 the von Werthern family was expropriated by the land reform . The castle was looted and turned into a school from 1946. VEG Memleben later became a legal entity. After the political change in the GDR , the Treuhand did not find an investor, so the city took the initiative. Since then, it has been secured, renovated and expanded in stages.
