Castle lake (Salem)

The Schlosssee is a quarry pond between the places Stefansfeld and Mimmenhausen in the municipality of Salem in the Lake Constance district in Baden-Württemberg .

The water has a maximum extension of 580 meters in a north-east direction and 510 meters in a west-east direction. The size is around 18 hectares. There are two islands in the lake.

Gravel mining began in the 1950s, and in 1980 a 60-hectare swimming and leisure area was completed. At the inauguration ceremony, the former quarry pond in the elaborately recultivated gravel mining area was given the new name Schloßsee after the nearby Salem Castle , which was a former monastery and is now a boarding school . The Castle Lake Festival has been held here every year since then .

To the east of the lake is the Hardt forest area, separated by state road 205 . Between the forest and the lake, more than 800 amphibians migrate every year, mainly common toads and occasionally common frogs. To protect the animals, protective measures are taken on the road during the toad migrations.

Expansion 2010–2014

In 2011 the castle lake was expanded to become a nature adventure park. For this purpose, the construction of a circular path around the lake and the revitalization of the lake were planned. For this purpose, mud was pumped out on the bank area. The expansion cost around 1.5 million euros. Wooden bridges were built that connect water and landscape and bring them into harmony, and a playground was created.

In 2014 the island was converted into an adventure island. Among other things, a wooden pirate ship was built there.
