Schmalzturm in Landsberg am Lech

The Schmalzturm , also known as the beautiful tower, is a building of the first city wall (early 14th century) of Landsberg am Lech . As an ornament, clover-leaf friezes run around the tower; Colorful roof tiles in the city colors and a storm bell attachment express the importance of the gate. It was given the nickname »Schmalzturm« because on nice days the market women stood in the shadow of the gate with their goods, including lard. This way the lard remained stronger and could be sold better.

The Sparkasse Landsberg-Dießen is now located in the tower's premises.

The cannonball above the tower passage reminds of the occupation time in 1796 by Napoleonic troops, who were not exactly squeamish with the citizens of Landsberg.

The city wall continues at the Schmalzturm, while the locksmiths' property is attached to the outside. Thus, the function of the wall was also geared towards fire protection. The locksmiths worked with open fire (danger of conflagration) and for this reason were always located on the outskirts or outside of the city. To the left of the Schmalzturm the yellow house with a bay window, here was the rent office (forerunner of the tax office) with large storage tanks. The stork wheel on the roof is a reminder that there was all around the meadow landscape and thus enough food for the storks.

At the end of this row of houses are the ducal rooms. Duke Wolfgang had built this small residence for himself in the 16th century because the old castle no longer met his requirements. In the middle of the building you can still see the courtyard passage that led to the farm buildings. Today a small passage leads to Georg-Hellmair-Platz.
