The Schmidberger Renette is an old variety of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). The variety, also known as Schmidberger's Renette , Schmidberger's Rote Renette , Plankenapfel , Grünlocherl or Striped Winter Parmäne , comes from the Austrian Mostviertel and was chosen as the orchard variety of the year in Austria in 2008 .

Schmidberger's Renette is an undemanding and robust apple variety that ripens in October and can be kept until March if stored appropriately.

There is a round and a tall form of the variety, which differ somewhat in calyx formation, fruit shape and pulp quality.

Schmidberger's Renette

The fruits of the Schmidberger Renette are medium-sized, 50 to 68 mm high, 60 to 73 mm wide and with a firm skin. In addition to the greenish-yellow basic color, the apples develop a washed-out red to dark red covering color with carmine to dark purple stripes. The pulp is medium-hard and juicy, the taste is described as pleasantly sour, sweet and slightly spicy. The nucleus is medium-sized with a hollow axis and well-developed seeds.

The little weather-sensitive Schmidberger Renette flowers mid-early. The onset of earnings starts late, but is plentiful, usually overabundant every two years.

Schmidberger's Renette forms a tree with a broadly arched, branched crown and heavily hanging branches.

Origin and Distribution

In Austria, Schmidberger's Renette has been traceable in the Mostviertel and Innviertel regions since around 1750. The pomologist and pharmacist Georg Liegel , who lives in Braunau am Inn , was the first to describe the variety and dedicated it to the pomologist Josef Schmidberger .
