Georg Liegel

Georg Liegel (born May 3, 1779 in Schäferei near Waldmünchen as Georg Liegl; † September 6, 1862 in Braunau am Inn ) was a pomologist and pharmacist .

Life

Liegel studied pharmacy in Munich . After completing his studies, he bought a pharmacy in Braunau in 1803. In 1809 he was appointed mayor.

In addition, Liegel worked intensively on fruit growing. He collected types of fruit and owned one of the largest collections of his time. In 1851 he offered 1120 different types of fruit in a directory, of which he sent Edelreiser within Europe and even as far as America. Liegel specialized primarily in stone fruit and also cultivated many regional plum varieties in his collection .

Liegel found a previously unknown apple variety in the area around Braunau and named it Schmidberger Renette after the pomologist Father Josef Schmidberger (1773-1844) .

Georg Liegel is the author of numerous publications with pomological content.
