Lewis , an American businessman. The Lone Ranger was used by the institute on various research trips in the Atlantic . In 2012 the ship was spun off from the Schmidt Ocean Institute's scientific fleet and decommissioned. The successor to Lone Ranger was the Falkor , an approximately 83 meter long, former German fisheries protection ship that was bought by the German federal government in 2009. The program managers of the Schmidt Ocean Institute have invited scientists from all over the world to apply to use the Falkor as an expedition and research ship. Research proposals for the time on board the Falkor are reviewed by independent scientists.
