Snow Falling on Cedars , English title Snow Falling on Cedars , is a 1994 published novel by the American writer David Guterson , the internment of Japanese-born Americans discussed during the Second World War. The work has been translated into more than 30 languages, sold over four million times worldwide, received the PEN / Faulkner Award in 1995 and filmed in 1999 by Scott Hicks .

action

Carl Heine, a fisherman of German descent on the coast of Washington State , is found drowned and caught in his own nets. However, he also has a serious head injury, so a murder cannot be ruled out. Resentment against the Japanese people is still very high in the years after the Second World War and especially after the attack on Pearl Harbor , which is why another fisherman named Kabuo Miyamoto is suspected of the murder. Ishmael Chambers, who reports for the local newspaper, may have information to prove Kabuo's innocence. But his old love for Kabuo's wife, Hatsue Miyamoto, confronts him with a dilemma.

Guterson also addresses the long-term taboo harassment against the Japanese-born US population during the Second World War through the internment of Japanese-born Americans with expropriations and forced labor.
