Damage characteristics

Increasingly, there is snow breakage in the middle and high mountains, where a lot of wet and heavy snow falls. But also forests and forests in swale and boiler documents are disproportionately affected because there cause the lower wind speeds to the fact that quite a lot of snow on the trees accumulate can.

Snow breakage occurs more frequently in conifers because of their larger attack surface than in the deciduous trees that are bare in winter . In the case of technical infrastructure, overhead lines and the like are particularly at risk.

activities

Disaster response under difficult conditions: clearing roads in heavy snow ( Mühlviertel, 2019 )

If there is a risk of a snow break, stretches are usually completely closed, as entire trees, mainly shallow roots , can be uprooted and large, heavy branches threaten to break off, which happens spontaneously even a long time after the actual weather event. If there is a risk of snow breakage, a forest must be closed as a preventive measure for forestry reasons .

The planting of snow-resistant tree species and regular maintenance, especially of the treetops, significantly reduces the risk of snow breakage.
