Cultural monument

The Schneider Bridge ( Albanian  Ura e Terzive , Serbian Терзијски мост Terzijski most , Turkish Terzi Köprüsü ) is a stone arch bridge on the northern edge of the small town of Bishtrazhin ( Bistražin ) east of Gjakova in Kosovo . It spans the Erenik and is one of the most important examples of bridge construction in the country from the Ottoman period. The bridge was probably built at the end of the 15th century, but rebuilt during the 18th century. The name is derived from the tailors ' guild  from Gjakova, which commissioned the construction.

The Schneider Bridge is one of the cultural monuments of Kosovo.

history

The length of the bridge

No information has been passed on when the bridge was originally built. It is believed, however, that the first bridge was built at the end of the 15th century. The bridge is located on the connection from Gjakova to Prizren , a trade route that was already used in the Middle Ages.

The bridge got its current appearance in the 18th century when it had to be extended due to changes in the course of the river and was significantly rebuilt. An inscription refers to the tailors' guild in Gjakova, which commissioned the work. Since then, the bridge has consisted of eleven arches made from local stones. The middle arch is slightly higher. Niches in the walls relieve the structure and give it an elegant look. The pavement was more than three and a half meters wide, the whole bridge is at least five meters wide.

A modern road bridge was built parallel to the Schneider Bridge at a distance of a few meters, over which the traffic from Gjakova to Prizren runs today.

Restoration work was carried out between 1982 and 1984.
