history

The Schola Cantorum Leipzig was founded in 1963 by its then musical director Reinhardt Syhre as the school choir of the Ernst Schneller School (today Marienbrunner Elementary School) Leipzig. Until 1982 the ensemble worked under the name Gewandhaus Children's Choir under the direction of Syhres at the Leipzig Opera and the Leipzig Gewandhaus, among other things in 15 standard operas , in large concert performances, radio and recordings. In 1982 the collaboration with the Opera and the Gewandhaus was ended and the ensemble was taken over by the City Council as the City of Leipzig's children's choir . After reunification in 1990, it was incorporated into the Leipzig School Administration Office as a “special educational institution” under the name of the Leipzig Children's and Youth Choir SCHOLA CANTORUM . In 1999 the ensemble organized the official ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Berlin Reichstag . In addition to concerts in Leipzig , the ensemble has traveled to almost all regions of Germany and, since 1994, also abroad. The choir has made guest appearances in South Africa , Italy , Israel , Finland , the USA , Great Britain , Spain , Poland and France . Today, almost 300 children, adolescents and young adults sing and make music in the Schola Cantorum, from early musical education to sparrow choirs, children's choirs, girls' choirs to women's choirs and chamber choirs.

Girls and women choir

The girls and women choir of the Schola Cantorum Leipzig is particularly dedicated to the performance of a cappella music composed for equal voices, but also works with various orchestras in the performance of choral symphonic works. The choir devotes itself intensively to the German romantic repertoire ( Mendelssohn , Schumann , Brahms , Rheinberger and others). Numerous world premieres and commissioned works demonstrate the high level of commitment of the Schola Cantorum Leipzig to contemporary choral music.
