Schopenstehl is a street in Hamburg's old town . The street became famous through the Schopenstehl riots.

Location and description

Schopenstehl is located in Hamburg-Altstadt in the Hamburg-Mitte district . The mostly cobblestone street runs in an east-west direction between the streets Alter Fischmarkt and Kattrepel and has a length of about 180 meters. Several buildings along the street are listed.

To the north of the street was the Mariendom until 1805 , in its place today the green area Domplatz, which has been prepared as a monument, is located. To the east there are 2 houses with the numbers 13 and 15. On the south side of the street, however, the house numbers increase to the west - leaving gaps - from 20 to 33.

Schopenstehl riots

After the SPD had called for protest actions, riots broke out in the street on January 17, 1906. On that day, the Hamburg citizenship debated a plan directed against the SPD to worsen the electoral law. The protests began around 4 p.m. at work. After 10 p.m. there was destruction, looting and arson, as well as street battles with the police. Due to the timing of the start of the protest and the large number of participants, the protest was later referred to as "Germany's first general strike".
