Districts

The Hamburg-Mitte district is one of seven districts of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . It runs right through the Hanseatic city from the western to the eastern state border and, in addition to downtown Hamburg, also includes large parts of the Hamburg port , Finkenwerder, the east of Hamburg from Hammerbrook to Billstedt and the 120 kilometers away from three islands located in front of Cuxhaven in the Elbe estuary existing Neuwerk district . The Wilhelmsburg district , formerly in the Harburg district , has also been part of the Hamburg-Mitte district since the district reform in 2006.

Districts

The Mitte district consists of 19 districts: Billbrook , Billstedt , Borgfelde , Finkenwerder , HafenCity , Hamburg-Altstadt , Hamm , Hammerbrook , Horn , Kleiner Grasbrook , Neustadt , Neuwerk , Rothenburgsort , St. Georg , St. Pauli , Steinwerder , Veddel , Waltershof and Wilhelmsburg .

In contrast to the districts of Altona, Harburg and Wandsbek, most of the Hamburg-Mitte district has been part of Hamburg's national territory for centuries. Only Billstedt, Wilhelmsburg and the south of Finkenwerder were only added by the Greater Hamburg Act on April 1, 1937. After Neuwerk had belonged to Hamburg earlier (until March 31, 1937), it was added again on October 1, 1969.

Parks

There are several parks in Hamburg-Mitte: Planten un Blomen in the St. Pauli and Neustadt districts , the Öjendorfer Park with Öjendorfer See in Billstedt , the Elbpark Entenwerder in Rothenburgsort , the Hammer Park in Hamm , the Inselpark in Wilhelmsburg and the Blohms Park , the Horner Rennbahn amusement park and the von Dratelnsche Park , all three in Horn .

Nature reserves

There are seven nature reserves and a national park in the Hamburg-Mitte district.

District Office and District Assembly

Until 2017, the district office of Hamburg-Mitte was located in the listed City-Hof high-rise buildings in Klosterwall (near the main train station ), the demolition of which began in 2019. Since then, it has been housed in the former Axel Springer publishing complex in Caffamacherreihe 1–3, which is also accessible from Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße 20. The city of Hamburg bought the 30,400 m² building from the media group in 2014 for around 130 million euros. The approximately 1,000 employees of the district office were relocated to the new location, 80 percent of them in individual offices. The cost of the renovation work was put at around 30 million euros. The meeting room of the district assembly , which is also used for public meetings, is located in the former editorial rooms of the Bild newspaper on the 11th floor . For certain services (registration and ID matters) there are also customer centers in Billstedt , Finkenwerder and Wilhelmsburg .

District Office Manager has been Falko Droßmann ( SPD ) since February 25, 2016 .

Dirk Sielmann (SPD) has been chairman of the district assembly since 2008. Since 2019, his deputies have been Steffen Leipnitz ( Die Linke ) and Clemens Willenbrock ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). A red-green coalition had existed in the district since 2004 , interrupted by an SPD-FDP coalition from 2011 to 2014. After the CDU became the largest parliamentary group in the district for the first time in 2004 , the SPD regained this position in 2008. In the district assembly elections on May 26, 2019, the Greens became the strongest force. However, accusations of Islamism were raised against two members, whereupon the parliamentary group constituted itself without these members. At the same time, four other elected members did not join the Green parliamentary group either in protest. The six MPs initially formed their own parliamentary group (“Greens 2”) and finally joined the SPD parliamentary group in early October 2019. In December 2019, the SPD, CDU and FDP concluded a so-called Germany coalition that has governed the district ever since,

Constituencies

The Hamburg-Mitte district is divided into the two constituencies of Hamburg-Mitte and Billstedt-Wilhelmsburg-Finkenwerder for elections to the citizenship and the district assembly .

Partnerships

The Hamburg-Mitte district maintains a partnership with the Hongkou district of Shanghai in the People's Republic of China and, since 2007, with the Izmir-Konak district in Turkey .

Others

On October 10, 2010, the district received the title Place of Diversity awarded by the federal government .
