The crested capuchin monkey ( Sapajus robustus , syn .: Cebus apella cay ) is a primate species from the family of the Capuchin monkeys within the New World monkey that occurs only in a small area in eastern Brazil.

distribution

Its very small distribution area is located in the southeast of the Brazilian state of Bahia and extends south to the part of Espírito Santo north of the Rio Doce . It also occurs in a small area in eastern Minas Gerais (up to the Serra do Espinhaço ).

features

The crested capuchin monkey reaches a weight of 1.3 to 4.8 kg, has a head-trunk length of 42 to 56 cm (males) or 33 to 44 cm (females) and a 43 to 56 cm long tail. The fur on the back, arms and legs, hands and feet are dark brown to blackish, the abdomen reddish or yellowish. The face is dark gray, there is some whitish hair on the forehead and temples. The head of hair characteristic of the genus Sapajus is conical. There is no noticeable gender dimorphism .

Way of life

The crested capuchin monkey lives in humid forests, in the Caatinga , in forest islands in the Cerrado region and in Bahia also in remnants of the Atlantic rainforest . Nothing more is known about his diet. Like other capuchin monkeys, it will feed on fruits, seeds, flowers, small vertebrates, beetles, and other invertebrates. It lives in groups of eight to ten animals, with one to three males, females and young animals. Smaller groups are likely the result of hunting.

Danger

Due to the small distribution area, the hunting and the conversion of their habitat to agricultural and forestry purposes, the type of the IUCN as endangered ( Endangered ) listed.
