The Schrangen ( Danish Skrangerne ) in the center of Flensburg at Grosse Strasse 58 is a listed building from the 16th century.

background

The Schrangen was built in 1595 by the master builder Dirick Lindingk on behalf of the St. Marien parish. The site was on a plot of land where there was previously a small chapel in the northern area , which had been unused by a bookbinder after the Reformation . The southern area of this property originally belonged to the St. Marienkirchhof and housed a family grave. The brick built Schrangen was designed as a connecting building between the church and Nordermarkt , but should serve as a secular building . For centuries the Schrangen housed a baker's and a butcher's stalls in the arcades on the ground floor. Apparently there was an apartment upstairs. On the south side of the Schrangen, a metal eyelet was anchored in the masonry on the south-western building pillar, to which the neck iron was attached. This was the pillory of the parish. Erected shortly after the construction of the Schrangen, the Lindingk, apparently from Rendsburg, and also the Kompagnietor at the nearby Flensburg ship bridge .

Later the Schrangen lost its market function . The Schrangen was used several times. In the 19th century the Schrangen was apparently used as a police station. In 1989 the inside of the Schrangen was heavily rebuilt. Apparently it has served various ecclesiastical purposes since then. The church office of St. Marien and a world shop have been located on the ground floor since 2005 . The upper floor houses a meeting room for the parish. In the northern part of the upper floor, old decorative wall paintings are said to have been preserved to this day. Incidentally, during renovation work around 1990, the foundations of the chapel that previously stood there were exposed under the northern part of the Schrangen, where the church office is located. Books discovered in the process are to be stored in the state central library today .
