The Schukiw Island ( Ukrainian Жуків острів , Russian Жуков остров / Schukow ostrow ) is a river island of the Dnieper in the south of the Ukrainian capital Kiev . Much of the island, which has been connected to the right Dneprufer by a dam since the 1960s, is under nature protection .
The island lies in the middle of the river between the left Dneprufer and the Cossack island and administratively belongs to the Kiev city of Holosiyiv . The length of the island is about 3.6 km and the widest part of the island is about 1000 m.
The Zhukiv Island was formerly the hunting ground of the princes and partly belonged to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra and was used as pastureland. In the 1930s, tunneling under the Dnepr began here, but was not completed.
The floodplains on the island are a rarity in Europe. The flora includes more than 120 rare, partially protected plant species. The largest group of animals on the island are birds, a large number of which are also rare or endangered species, such as the sea eagle. According to ornithologists, the island is of paramount importance for the conservation and reproduction of the partridge. Mammals on the island include ermines, otters, beavers, stone marten, raccoon dog, water vole and muskrat. Furthermore, around 20 different fish species live here.
