The lesson is a fixed period of time for the course of the lesson both in school lessons and in adult education.

In most German-speaking countries, one lesson is 45 minutes , in Austria it is usually 50 minutes. Exceptions arose in the federal states in which the gymnasium career was shortened to eight years (see e.g. the 60-minute cycle with a duration of 60 minutes per school lesson). However, this regulation can differ from country to country, within Germany also from federal state to federal state, since the legislation on school law is a state matter .

Colloquially, the school lesson is also called just an hour . ("We have seven hours tomorrow.")

history

As early as 1883 the school lesson was 45 minutes for the first time in the Katharineum in Lübeck . The school hours , which differ from the time hour , were introduced in Prussia on August 22, 1911 by August von Trott zu Solz at the Prussian grammar schools. Since there were not many schools of this type yet, this daily reduction in teaching time also enabled students from outside the school cities to access higher education without having to live in a boarding school at the school location.

The duration of 45 minutes is based on the so-called academic quarter . At many universities , lectures begin fifteen minutes later than indicated in the course catalog and therefore do not last a full hour. Historically, this is due to the need for lecturers and students to move between different lectures.

Most frequent hourly rhythm

As a rule, school lessons in German-speaking countries start around 8 a.m., which varies between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. depending on the school (mostly due to the arrival and departure times of public transport). The lessons are often organized in double lessons (2 × 45 minutes), with a break of 15 minutes between two hours. After the sixth hour there is usually a longer lunch break, which is often declared as the seventh hour. Usually the division ends with the eleventh or twelfth hour.

Short hours

In order not to cancel lessons on certain occasions that require lessons to end earlier (last day of school, conferences, events), these - especially in secondary schools - can be shortened to 30 minutes as short lessons.

Back to school

In many German-speaking schools, the first lesson begins at 8:00 a.m. In 2012, researchers from the University of Basel surveyed around 2,700 schoolchildren between the ages of 13 and 18 on this topic. One result: If the start of school in the morning is postponed by 20 minutes, this already has an effect on the sleep duration and fatigue of young people. Young people whose lessons start at 8 a.m. sleep around 15 minutes longer and are more alert than those who have to be at school at 7:40 a.m. The average sleep duration of the respondents during the school week was approximately 8 hours and 40 minutes. Adolescents who slept for less than eight hours showed greater fatigue during the day, poorer school performance and generally a more negative outlook on life.

Adult education

In the adult education one is lesson (abbreviated TH or VAT ) is a measure of a lesson. One lesson lasts 45 minutes, similar to the school lesson.

In reporting and in the state funding of adult education in various federal states, the term has replaced the previously common term of (teaching) double hours , even if the appeal to school teaching is criticized by representatives of process and participant-oriented adult education.

For seminars and lectures in adult education, units of two or three lessons without a break are common. In the case of events lasting several days with overnight stays in a conference center (adult education in "boarding school"), the lessons are combined into participant days .
