Schwäbischer Merkur and Schwäbische Chronik (also initially: Schwäbische Chronick , later: Schwäbische Kronik ) were two daily newspapers that belonged together in Stuttgart . The Chronicle dealt with domestic politics, while Mercury was reserved for news from abroad.

They were founded in 1785 by Christian Gottfried Elben and have been in the family for several generations. From 1850 to 1860 Albert Schäffle was editor of the Swabian Merkur. Other employees included David Friedrich Strauss , Gustav von Rümelin , Paul and Gustav Pfizer . Otto Elben was editor-in-chief from 1854 to 1894 .

The newspaper was the leading daily newspaper in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the 19th century . It appeared in two sections as well as supplements:

  • Swabian Mercury, (Section I, which contains the events that occur outside of Swabia).
  • Swabian Chronicle, (II. Section of Swabian Mercury with local news within Swabia).
  • Supplements to the Swabian Merkur (contain commercial advertisements, event information, auction news, etc.).

Mercury and Chronicle both appeared daily (except on some major public holidays), each about 357 issues per year, each with about 6 pages.

In 1932, the Swabian Merkur was one of the 13 largest daily newspapers in the People's State of Württemberg ; it appeared until May 1941.

Both newspapers can be viewed in the Württemberg State Library .
