The Schwaltenweiher is a reservoir in the Ostallgäu foothills of the Alps. The body of water is 14 km from the Allgäu Alps between the communities of Seeg and Rückholz . Nowadays the Schwaltenweiher is used as a bathing lake and for fish farming .
term
The term Schwaltenweiher is derived from the Schwalten mill built there, which in turn derives its name from the family name Schwalt / Schwald. In the past it was assumed that the name Schwaltenweiher was derived from the Middle High German word swellen, which means something like to stow. However, since the name Schwalten was already in use for the nearby mill and the hamlet of the same name before the lake was dammed, it could also be possible that the first theory of naming via the family name used in Allgäu and Tyrol is more obvious.
Another name of the pond that was used earlier was Goldhasenweiher , named after the hamlet of Goldhasen on the west side .
history
Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg had the Schwaltenweiher laid out in 1514 for the purpose of fish farming and as a waterfowl hunting area.
His nearby Falkenberg Castle (by today's Golden Hare on the west bank) was destroyed by the Imperial troops during the Thirty Years' War so that it could not fall into the hands of the Swedes who were advancing at the time .
In the centuries that followed, the lake changed hands several times, but has remained in private ownership to this day.
Leisure and Tourism
The mountain panorama on the Schwaltenweiher with a view of the Allgäu and Tannheimer Alps , especially in summer, invites locals and tourists to enjoy the view. The Schwaltenweiher and the nearby municipality of Seeg are often referred to as the “box seat in front of the Alps ” because of this Alpine panorama . The Schwaltenweiher, an average of four meters deep, is one of the most popular bathing lakes in the region. There is a circular hiking trail around the lake with its two islands. There is also the option of renting row boats or playing beach volleyball .
