The humpbacked limia ( Limia nigrofasciata ) is an on Hispaniola endemic occurring freshwater fish . It belongs to the viviparous toothcarps (Poeciliinae). It is also known as the black- banded or humpback pair .

features

Black banded rag grow up to 6 cm, males stay up to 5.5 cm a little smaller than their female counterparts. The body of the fish looks stocky with a pointed head. Older males develop a hump, the degree of which is unique within the viviparous toothcarps. This makes her body look very high and flattened on the sides. Along the rear, lower half of the body, there is a well-developed scaled keel, similar to that of the knife-calf ( Alfaro cultratus ).

The basic color of the Kärpfling is olive yellow, the underside is white. There are 7–12 vertical black stripes distributed over the sides of the body. Occasionally there are also animals that have further black spots between the stripes. Depending on the incidence of light, the sides can shimmer metallic. The dorsal fin of the males has numerous, unevenly distributed comma-shaped black spots. In alpha males, the dorsal fin appears almost completely black. All fins are tinted slightly yellow. Both sexes show the same pattern, which is more pronounced in the males.

Occurrence and way of life

Limia nigrofasciata has so far been found in the Etang Saumâtre and at the northern end of Lake Miragoâne in Haiti . Nothing is known about the diet in nature.

When keeping an aquarium, the Kärpfling prefers hard and mineral-rich water. If the water is too soft, the fish tend to rock. The feeding should be balanced and contain a vegetable component. On average, the females give birth to between 10 and 60 young fish approx. 8 mm long every 28 days. The animals reached sexual maturity at the age of five months.
