Limia (to Spanish limia " sump ") is a genus of livebearing toothcarps (Poeciliinae). The fish are found in the Greater Antilles ( Cuba , Jamaica , Hispaniola , Grand Cayman ) and in Venezuela . The genus was temporarilycountedas a sub-genus to Poecilia and raised again in 1980 to the rank of an independent genus.

features

Limia species reach lengths between 2.7 cm and 10 cm. They are more or less stocky fish of a brownish color. Males are more colorful and flattened on the sides, while females are plumper. Like all Poeciliinae, Limia species are viviparous. The gestation period is usually around 4 weeks. The fry are sexually mature at the age of 4 to 6 months. All of the Limia species examined as a result can be crossed in the aquarium. The hybrids are sterile, however.

Systematics

The genus Limia belongs to the tribe Poeciliini and is most likely related to a subgenus of Poecilia ( Poecilia (Poecilia) ). The species from this subgenus are also similar to the Limia species in their external shape.
