Black art

As a black art an artisan or artistic activity is referred to, in with ink reproductions on paper are made. In the craft sector, the term is directly or indirectly linked to the development of movable type and letterpress printing , with "black" referring to the black printing ink used in books and newspapers. In the artistic field, the term includes the areas of printmaking such as copperplate engraving , etching and lithography as well as typography and book art .

This term applies in particular to the activities of the printer and the typesetter . After Gautschen , members of these professions are allowed to call themselves “disciples of black art”, “black artist” or “disciples of Gutenberg ”.

In a similar context there is the term “white art”, which refers to the skills involved in making paper.
