The Black Lake is located in the Sternberg lake landscape about 14 kilometers southeast of Sternberg and four kilometers southeast of Borkow in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

The lake is located in the municipality of Borkow and borders with its south and east banks on the municipality of Dobbertin . It is located in a natural landscape in the "Mittleres Mildenitztal " nature reserve near the Mildenitz valley. There are smaller bays in the northern part of the Black Lake. The lake is about 10 meters deep, over 600 meters wide and almost 900 meters long. The tributary from the neighboring duck lake flows into the west bank . As it emerges from the breakthrough valley, the Mildenitz flows through the Black Lake in the northeast, only to leave it after a few meters. The water is north of a hilly terminal moraine landscape, which is 62.1  m above sea level. Reached NHN . The lakeshore is completely wooded and rises steeply on the south and south-east bank, while the other banks are only moderately sloping or flat.

In the east, the Klädener Plage and Mildenitz-Durchbruchstal nature reserve borders the lake.
