The black sting beetle ( Hispa atra ) is a beetle from the leaf beetle family and the subfamily of the tortoise beetles (Cassidinae). It is the only species of the Hispini tribe that also occurs in Central Europe.

features

The matt black beetles are 3–4 mm long. The pronotum , the wing covers and the first antennae are thorn-reinforced. In Central Europe the species is unmistakable.

distribution

The species is widespread in Central Europe. They occur in the north as far as Denmark and southern Sweden. In the south the distribution area extends to North Africa, in the east over the Middle East and Central Asia to China. Hispa atra is not represented in the British Isles .

Way of life

The adult beetles can be seen between April and September. They prefer dry locations as their habitat. The larvae mine on leaves of various types of grass, especially panicle grasses ( Poa ) and couch grass ( Elymus ). In the Mediterranean there is a related species, the brown sting beetle ( Dicladispa testacea ).

Systematics

The tribe Hispini, to which the black sting beetle belongs, was run as an independent subfamily Hispinae until recently, but was later integrated into the subfamily of the tortoise beetles. More than half of the species in this subfamily are counted among the Hispini. They differ from the other shield beetles mainly in the mining lifestyle of their larvae.
