Black Tower in Wölfersheim

The Black Tower is a former defense tower of the medieval city fortifications of the Wölfersheim district in the municipality of the same name in the Wetterau district in Hesse .

Architecture and history

The rectangular shell tower with a tiled roof originally had four round guard houses and a higher roof that was covered with slate . It was completed between the 14th and 15th centuries, before the White Tower was completed in 1408.

The open back prevented any intruders from finding cover in the tower. The defenders were able to fire at the intruders from the inner side of the village.

The three attacks from the city of Butzbach in 1425 were a practical test for the fortifications, and thus also for the Black Tower . The Butzbachers even took the cannons from their city wall for this.

The Black Tower received a half-timbered porch on the side of the village in the 19th century and was then used as a poor house.
