White Tower (Wölfersheim)

White Tower Wölfersheim

The White Tower is the landmark of the Wölfersheim district in the municipality of the same name in the Wetterau district in Hesse . The round tower with stone helmet and battlement was with its height of 27 meters the largest structure of the city fortifications of Wölfersheim, completed in 1408 with the white tower.

history

The tower was completed in 1408. The original entrance, ten meters high, is at the same height as the former city wall and will be made accessible again soon. This entrance and the place where the tower is straight and not round can be seen on the north side of the tower. It is at this point precisely because the city wall ran along it and because, like the three other former defense towers of Wölfersheim, it was left open to the town. This also shows that the tower was outside the wall.

The White Tower used to be the only entrance to the fortified Wölfersheim, the so-called old gate , which led over the no longer existing bridge. It was not until 1550 that a new gate was broken into the city wall on today's linden tree .

The three attacks by the city of Butzbach in 1425 were practical tests for the fortifications, and thus also for the White Tower . The Butzbachers even took the cannons from their city wall for this.

architecture

It is 26.5 meters high and has 96 steps. The diameter is 8.5 meters, including the wall thickness 1.6 to 2.2 meters and the inner diameter 4.5 to 5.5 meters. The good preservation of the tower can probably be explained by its continued use. When the fortifications were only partially protected by modern weapons, the fortified tower on the ground floor was used as a prison.

Others

In the anniversary year 2008, “600 years of the White Tower” was celebrated with several events and a festival weekend. During the Christmas season , a chain of lights is hung over the battlements and the spire. It then switches on every day at 4.15 p.m. and lights up until 10 p.m. / 11 p.m.
