The black-fruited wire bush ( Muehlenbeckia axillaris ) is a species of wire bush . It is assigned to the subfamily Polygonoideae in the knotweed family (Polygonaceae).

description

The black-fruited wire shrub is a deciduous, creeping, mat-like growing dwarf shrub with wire-like, thin, finely gray haired, gold-colored to black branches. The leaves are ovate to round, 5 to 10 millimeters long and have a stalk about 3 millimeters long. The upper side of the leaf is dark green, the underside gray-green.

The flowers are yellowish green and stand alone or in pairs in the leaf axils. The species blooms from May to June.

The fruits are black and shiny.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

The species is found in New Zealand in cool, moist forests on well-drained, fresh to moist, moderately nutrient-rich, sandy or gritty-humic, acidic to neutral soils . However, she avoids calcareous soils. The species prefers sunny locations, it loves warmth and is only moderately frost hardy.
