The black-faced sheathbill ( Chionis minor ) is a kind from the family of sheathbills , a small family in the order of Regenpfeiferartigen , besides this type only the to the snowy sheathbill heard as recent Art.

There are currently four subspecies.

Appearance

The black-faced vaginal beak reaches a body length of 38 to 41 centimeters. The wingspan is 74 to 79 centimeters. The weight varies between 450 and 760 grams. Similar to the white-faced sheathbill, the plump physique and the short legs in relation to the body are reminiscent of a chicken. The plumage is completely white, only the non-feathered areas on the face are black. This is how the black-faced sheathbill differs from the white-faced sheathbill. The distribution areas of the two species do not overlap, however.

distribution

The black-faced sheathbill is found on rocky coasts and the wetlands of the Prince Edward Islands , the Crozet Islands , the Kerguelen, and Heard . Unlike the white-faced sheath-beak, the black-faced sheath-beak is not a migratory bird, but stays in its range all year round.

Way of life

Chionis minor

The black-faced sheathbill is an omnivore and a common kleptoparasite . It steals fish and krill from other seabirds and also eats carrion, human waste, eggs and chicks. He is one of the important predators in penguin colonies .

It almost always nests near penguin or other sea bird colonies. The breeding season falls from October to April. The eggs are laid between December and January, and chicks can be seen in January and February. The clutch usually consists of two to three eggs. These are incubated for 27 to 33 days. The chicks are constantly hoed for the first 14 days of life and fledged between 55 and 60 days.
