The Schwarzlsee is a groundwater lake in Premstätten in Styria (Austria), in the flat Grazer Feld about 12 km south of the provincial capital Graz . The 56 ha large and up to 12 m deep lake is divided into the somewhat larger South and North Seas, which were formerly separate quarry ponds for gravel with a narrow strip of land in between. The two quarry ponds were navigably connected by dredging a body of water about 2 m deep and 10 m wide. The two headlands that form the banks here were bridged with a suspension bridge with 2 pylons (commonly known as the Golden Gate Bridge ) for pedestrians, cyclists and inline skaters. The arching of the bridge deck allows small sailing boats with mast to pass

The lake has gentle embankments all around, which serve as sunbathing areas and is the synonymous core of the Schwarzl Leisure Center (SFZ) and privately operated, fenced-in recreational area for the greater Graz area. There are several opportunities to practice water sports, including water skiing and wakeboarding on a water ski lift with ramps.

Both parts of the Schwarzlsee were created by the gravel mining of the construction company Schwarzl Beton, which extends deep into the groundwater . In 1984 the 140 hectare leisure center was opened as a subsequent use of the gravel mine. In addition to the lake for swimming, sports and night fishing, it houses the so-called "Styria Hall" - with a gable roof, administration and catering facilities - and the "Daviscup Hall" - with a textile film roof suspended from ropes - in which the Davis tennis competition is repeated -Cup was played. Both halls are used for events and have been used by refugees as mass quarters at various times around 2015.

In 2008 a mountain bike course with a "bike ranch" was operated in the forest east of the campsite . Later there was a paintball park here until 2019 .

Music festivals took place in an outdoor area and on the floating stage.

The Schwarzlsee site includes a year-round campsite northeast of the South Sea, which is occupied by long-term campers with caravans. In addition to summer gastronomy, there is a year-round restaurant on the southeast corner of the lake.

The east and the narrow north beach of the North Sea are used for nude bathing (nudist), in the west there is a surfing and sailing school.

On the South Pacific there are - separately - balancing equipment, a children's playground and a climbing tower.

Part of the Schwarzlsee site was the site of the International Garden Show (IGS) in 2000, for which a steel observation tower was built. The approximately 30 m high tower has been closed since then.

The Austrian Sculpture Park , which now belongs to the Universalmuseum Joanneum , with a separate entrance was created on part of the garden show area . This park is separated by a wall as privacy and noise protection and has its own entrance next to the main entrance in the south of the Schwarzlsee area and a small separate parking lot. A railroad tanker truck painted in gold stands outside the park, as a landmark at the junction of the road to the main entrance to the lake and park.

In addition to day entry or (swimming) season ticket per person for the lake, a similarly high contribution is required from entering vehicles. Bicycles are free.

Around 2000, the western entrance to the lake was opened, at least when there was a lot of traffic, and sometimes the smaller entrance to the northwest, but only for non-motorized vehicles. At that time all 3 exits were open in the evening. In any case, the site at the southern entrance was de facto open at night, even if operating hours actually apply to non-campers.

In autumn, surveillance cameras were installed at the south entrance in order to be able to identify suspects in the event of criminal offenses. For some years now, only this "main south entrance" has been open to the public. In the course of the corona pandemic, camping was even closed in spring 2020. The entrance has been secured with barriers and guard posts manned around the clock since 2020.

In the summer of 2020, Holding Graz will be offering a free shuttle bus with a 25-minute journey from Graz, Jakominiplatz - every 30 minutes during the school holidays.

The Schwarzl group of companies, including 4 holdings, has 12 locations in Styria and 2 in Croatia and is part of Porr AG . 1 km south of the Schwarzlsee, gravel mining and a concrete plant are still in operation, as is the administration of the Schwarzl Group. The leisure center has been operated by the Leutgeb Entertainment Group as a tenant since at least 2009 .

To the north of the Schwarzlsee there is a quarry pond, which has already been surrounded by year-round houses, and again to the north is the Samitzteich, which is surrounded by smaller buildings; both bodies of water are located southeast on Mitterstrasse, are fenced and each 20 hectares in size. 2 smaller quarry ponds are still northwest of Mitterstrasse.

To the west of the Schwarzlsee there is more than one public full connection to the Pyhrnautobahn A9 and in an indentation of the Schwarzlsee area there is a post of the motorway police with a small full connection including a bridge.

The Schwarzlsee and the two lakes to the north form, together with the almost 4 km long airport area, a large "block of houses" around which all paths lead around. From the northeast - from Graz - Mitterstraße leads to the street on the west side outside the Schwarzlsee. A full motorway connection is located at the south-west corner of the Seegeländ, a motorway slip road at the north-west corner, where Mitterstrasse crosses the motorway over a bridge.
