The black iguanas ( Ctenosaura ) are a genus of medium-sized to small lizards that belong to the family of iguanas .

Occurrence and habitat

Black iguanas are common across Central America.

Some of them are tree dwellers, others also inhabit landscapes with little trees. They mostly live in arid (dry) habitats. The Utila iguana has developed a way of life that is rather untypical for the group, but all the more remarkable . It lives in the salty and humid mangrove of a small Caribbean island and uses the dry areas of nearby sandy beaches to lay eggs in the breeding season.
