Arend Friedrich August Wiegmann

Arend Friedrich August Wiegmann (born June 2, 1802 in Braunschweig ; † January 15, 1841 there ) was a German zoologist .

Life

The son of the pharmacist Arend Joachim Friedrich Wiegmann studied medicine and philology at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin . In Berlin he worked for the zoologist Martin Lichtenstein . He received a professorship in Cologne in 1828 , before becoming associate professor in Berlin two years later. Wiegmann specialized in herpetology . He first described 53 species of reptiles.

He was the teacher of the botanist and zoologist Rudolph Amandus Philippi .

He is the father of the malacologist Carl Arend Friedrich Wiegmann (1836–1901).

Honors

In 1833 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
