The Swiss Competence Center for Social Sciences (FORS) is a national research institution and was founded in 2008. The purpose of the institution is the provision of services, research and the dissemination of research results in the social sciences. In particular, belong to the mandate

  • the collection of data in the context of national and international surveys;
  • the provision and documentation of data sets for secondary analyzes;
  • research in the field of social science topics, especially survey methods;
  • advising researchers at home and abroad.

FORS works with national and international social science research institutions and researchers in these fields.

The legal form is that of a foundation at the Lausanne University. In addition to the University of Lausanne, swissuniversities , the Federal Statistical Office and the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences have a seat on the eight-member Board of Trustees . It is financed by the federal government ( State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation ), through contributions from the Swiss National Science Foundation , the University of Lausanne and additional project-related third - party funding.

FORS integrates infrastructures and research projects such as B. the Swiss Household Panel (SHP), the Swiss Election Study (Selects), the Social Report and the Data and Research Information Service (DARIS).

In addition, FORS organizes courses such as the annual “Swiss Summer School on Methods in the Social Sciences”, monthly research method seminars (in collaboration with members of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Lausanne MISC and IMA), workshops at Swiss universities and universities of applied sciences and international conferences. FORS also provides a portal for data from public statistics - COMPASS.
