Switzerland (Dresden)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The restaurant Schweizerei was opened in 1872/1873 in the former "Naak`schen Gutsgrundstück" in Loschwitz . It was a restoration establishment that the Berlin merchant Eugen Rosenstiel had expanded accordingly after he had acquired the property and building. This also included the expansion of Schweizer Strasse (renamed Ulrichstrasse after it was incorporated into Dresden in 1921). The restoration also included the creation of a "romantic Alpine path" and the artificial valley "Goldgrund" with a small bridge.

1872 to 1945

From 1885 the entrepreneur Rosenstiel expanded the area with "Saxony's largest waterfall", further bridges and additional climbs. The waterfall was illuminated in a Bengali way and fed from the "Amalien rock spring". Fish farming was also carried out in the rock pond and the yields were offered freshly caught on site. There were also frequent children's parties, concerts and other entertainment activities.

On May 1, 1890 , August Bebel and Paul Singer spoke at the first Dresden May celebration. Hundreds of workers were present to commit to the eight-hour working day. A wooden plaque on the building wall still reminds of the event today. The tradition of May celebrations remained for many years. In 1903 August Bebel came again to found the central association of consumer associations.

Since 1892 the owner of the inn has changed several times.

In 1899 the property was taken over by the new owner Fritz Krüger, who on April 1, 1899 had a 2.80 m high Bismarck monument erected by Anton Schwarz and Adolf Schwarz next to the waterfall . The monument no longer exists today. In addition, a Bismarck oak was planted on the same day .

In December 1907, a fire destroyed parts of the building complex. As a result, the Großbauchlitzer brewery became the new owner until 1920. Due to economic problems, operations were stopped in 1942.

After 1945

After the end of the Second World War , the buildings were used for different purposes. They served as a residential building, refugee accommodation, at times also as the headquarters of a calendar manufacturer and a construction company, as well as storage areas and commercial premises for various companies. In 2005, the property was renovated in accordance with the preservation order. A memorial plaque refers to the history of Switzerland.
