Life

Adolf Schwarz was born in Spittelgrund No. 3 near Grottau an der Neisse in northern Bohemia. He was the sixth son of field gardener Wenzel Schwarz and Anna Bernert. He was baptized in the Roman Catholic Creed in the parish church of St. Bartholomew in Grottau. There were five brothers of the 16 children who had the profession of sculptor and history painter. The bishop of Dresden-Bautzen, her uncle Franz Bernert , financed and promoted her education and provided for a degree.

Adolf Schwarz married Maria Karolina Kunze. The marriage remained childless. In 1897 Schwarz came to Dresden as the last of his artistic brothers. The couple had lived there at Camelienstraße 1 since 1899. The “Fa. Gebr. Schwarz ".

Adolf Schwarz was buried on February 6, 1913 in the Johannisfriedhof in Dresden-Tolkewitz (Lg. 1.B.1.2), where the grave monument can still be seen today. The bust of Christ on the couple's tombstone comes from his studio.

Act

Adolf Schwarz had a number of artistically gifted and active brothers. Particularly noteworthy is his oldest brother Franz Schwarz , who was also a sculptor. Another brother, Joseph Schwarz, worked for a while in Franz Schwarz's studio. Another was the well-known and very productive painter Franz Wenzel Schwarz . Adolf Schwarz had a special relationship with his similarly old brother Anton Schwarz . Both worked together since 1897. You ran a studio in Dresden under the name “Fa. Gebr. Schwarz ".

Alongside Franz Schwarz, Adolf Schwarz was one of the most influential sculptors from Bohemia in the second half of the 19th century. There was further cooperation between the brothers. For example, some designs come from Wenzel Schwarz, or sculptures were signed with “Gebrüder Schwarz” long before the studio was founded by Adolf and Anton Schwarz. The work of the brothers cannot always be clearly assigned, especially since many monuments, sources and documents were lost in the two world wars.
