Joseph Schwarz (born June 5, 1848 in Spittelgrund , Bohemia; † after 1899) was a German-Bohemian sculptor.

Life

Joseph Schwarz was born in Spittelgrund No. 3 near Grottau an der Neisse in northern Bohemia. He was the fourth son of the field gardener Wenzel Schwarz and Anna Bernert. He was baptized in the Roman Catholic Creed in the parish church of St. Bartholomew in Grottau. There were five brothers of the 16 children who had the profession of sculptor and history painter. The bishop of Dresden-Bautzen, her uncle and godfather Franz Bernert , financed and promoted her training.

Joseph Schwarz worked in the studio of his brother Franz Schwarz .

His other brothers Adolf Schwarz and Anton Schwarz had their own atelier. Another brother was the painter Wenzel Schwarz .

On August 10, 1875, Joseph Schwarz married the choir singer (court theater singer) Bertha Christina Henke in Dresden. They had a daughter. After the death of his first wife, Joseph Schwarz married Theresia Rosina Schönfelder for the second time. There are two sons from this marriage.

Joseph Schwarz lived in Elistenstrasse since 1875. 37, from 1885 in Schnorrstr. 16 and from 1897 to 1900 in Dürerstr. 54. From 1901 the family is no longer recorded in the Dresden address books and the trace is lost.

Act

Joseph Schwarz is only very rarely mentioned directly in sources. As an employee in his brother Franz Schwarz's studio, he will undoubtedly have been directly involved in numerous works. In rare cases, works are directly attributed to him.

  • 1894, Jesus relief St. Pauli Church Dresden : Relief with the seated figure of the blessing Savior. It was modeled by the sculptor Ernst Paul. Execution by Joseph Schwarz in sandstone. The two sandstone figures to the left and right of the portal were made by his brother Franz Schwarz.
