Kurt Utz

Hermann Kurt Utz , also Hermann Curt Utz , (born May 7, 1901 in Bruck , † May 26, 1974 in Marburg ) was a German Protestant church musician, organist and composer .

life and work

From 1925 to 1927 Kurt Utz studied piano with Robert Teichmüller , organ with Karl Straube and music theory with Hermann Grabner at the Leipzig Conservatory . In 1927 he became a lecturer at the German Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Prague , and in 1929 he was appointed professor there. In 1930 he switched to the music academy in Mainz . There he was also active as a cantor and organist in the Christ Church . From 1934 to 1938 he worked as a church music director in Wiesbaden. From 1946 to 1948 he was choir conductor and Kapellmeister at the Wiesbaden State Theater . In 1948 he became university music director in Marburg and from 1951 also worked as a lecturer at the University of Giessen . From 1954 Utz also worked as a cantor and organist at the Elisabeth Church in Marburg. In 1966 Utz retired. In the last years of his life he was organist at the Markuskirche in the Marbach district of Marbach, in whose cemetery he found his final resting place on May 29, 1974.

Utz composed organ and choral works as well as chamber and stage music.
