Planting of a memorial tree in Dresden in May 2017: Lutherlinde at the Heilandskirche in Cotta

The list of memorial trees in Dresden contains the more than 80 known trees in today's urban area of Dresden that were planted to commemorate an event or a person. As natural objects with a cultural monument function, the memorial trees play a mediating role between natural monuments and cultural monuments . The planting of the memorial trees is closely linked to the associations that developed from the middle of the 19th century, as church, chant, homeland, school or war clubs often initiated such plantings. Accordingly, this practice experienced a high phase around 1900. After the tradition was frowned upon as bourgeois in the time of the GDR and hardly cultivated, it has been revived since the fall of the Wall . The memorial trees in Dresden are almost exclusively deciduous trees. Across all epochs, mainly oaks and linden trees were planted as they are well suited as memorial trees with their long life expectancy.

Are often represented Luther trees  - mostly Luther oaks -linden or - at round birthdays of Martin Luther (especially on the occasion of the 400th birthday in 1883) or anniversaries of the Reformation were planted (in particular to the 500th anniversary in 2017). On the occasion of anniversaries, the Saxon King Albert and the entire House of Wettin as the Saxon ruling family, the former Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and the poet Friedrich Schiller were honored several times with tree planting . The Dresden memorial trees can often be found in the old village centers or in the vicinity of churches. Some stand out among their peers, such as the 400-year-old schoolmaster linden tree at the Kaditzer Emmauskirche due to their age, the Meschwit sign in the St. Pauli cemetery as the largest known clapboard oak in Germany and the Alberteiche in Kauscha due to its stately growth.

However, not all memorial trees are recorded or known as such today. Some of them were forgotten because they were not equipped with memorial stones or other markings or because they were removed due to political iconoclasm or vandalism after the Second World War . Other memorial trees are no longer available because they are z. B. have already been felled due to old age. In addition, the research status differs considerably depending on the district, depending on the respective local chronicles and their evaluation.

The order in which they appear in the list depends on when the trees were planted. Individual trees that are protected due to their age or other properties are included in the list of natural monuments in Dresden .

Bronze medallion as memorial to the fallen on the trunk of the village of Oberwartha (further pictures)
Trunk detail of the political beech with incisions (further pictures)
Trunk detail of the split oak with war damage (further pictures)

In contrast to the other trees listed, the following three trees were not planted as a memorial, but only became memorials as fully grown trees through external influences.

"KPD" and "SED" as well as a swastika that wassupposed to covera previously carved symbol of the Iron Front (three diagonally downward arrows); presumably the remote side valley was same in the era of National Socialism a retreat of opposition or resistance fighters.
  • Split oak : about 40 meters south of the mosaic fountain in the Great Garden (location) ; English oak ( Quercus robur L. ); hit by fragments of bombs during the air raids on Dresden in February 1945 and has been badly marked since then, mainly on the side of the trunk facing the city center; at the foot of the tree there is a memorial plaque inaugurated on May 8, 2017.
