Systematics
The genus Sparrmannia was in 1782 by Carl von Linné jr. , the son of Carl von Linné . The generic name Sparrmannia honors the Swedish doctor and botanist Anders Sparrman , who was a student of Carl von Linné and who took part in James Cook's second voyage of discovery from 1772 to 1775 . Together with Carl Peter Thunberg , Anders Sparrman explored the South African flora and is likely to have discovered the Cape Linden tree and introduced it to Europe. The correct spelling of the botanical generic name was made binding in 1993 as Sparrmannia . However, one often finds the previously valid name spelling Sparmannia .
The genus of Sparrmannia includes about seven species with a few subspecies, the botanical nomenclature of which there is no uniform opinion in the literature (selection):
- Cape Linden ( Sparrmannia africana L. f. ), Native to South Africa
- Sparrmannia ricinocarpa Kuntze , native to South Africa and Madagascar
