The subfamily of grewioideae belongs to the family of mallow (Malvaceae). The 25 genera with around 770 species are mainly found in the tropical areas of the world.
Origin of name
Name-giving genus of the subfamily is Grewia with 290 species. This is named after the English botanist Nehemiah Grew (1628–1682). The subfamily of the Grewioideae was described in 1999 by Bayer et al. as part of their new classification or shift from the linden family (Tiliaceae) to the mallow family (Malvaceae).
Systematics
The genera of the subfamily Grewioideae used to belong to the linden family. With the new systematic knowledge gained from molecular biological research, the subfamily of the Grewioideae was newly formed and - together with the new subfamily of the Tilioideae - incorporated into the mallow family. The Byttnerioideae are regarded as a "sister family" with similar characteristics and systematic development, the most famous representative of which is the cocoa tree in the genus Theobroma .
Botanical description
The representatives of the Grewioideae typically have free sepals . Nectar glands can sit on the petals or on the androgynophore . The stamens are not fused in most representatives of the Grewioideae.
