The Tzschirnerplatz is a square in Dresden . It is located in the northeast of the inner old town in the city center of the Saxon state capital.

location

Zeughausplatz (Tzschirnerplatz, center), around 1935.

The square is located in the district of Altstadt I in the historic city center and thus belongs to the statistical district of Innere Altstadt in the district of Altstadt . It stretches from the confluence of Akademiestrasse and Brühlscher Garten in the northeast to the intersection of Schießgasse , Rampischer Strasse and Salzgasse in the southwest.

layout

In 2011 and 2012, the flooring was reconstructed with large paving based on the historical model. In addition, the city had historical candelabra set up for lighting. With the exception of a young silver linden tree at the top between Rampischer Strasse and Salzgasse, the square is not green. It is a Luther linden tree donated by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony and planted by Regional Bishop Jochen Bohl on October 30, 2012 on the occasion of the 495th anniversary of the Reformation , making it one of the memorial trees in Dresden .

Development

Southern tip of the Albertinum on Tzschirnerplatz, 2012.

Two buildings surround Tzschirnerplatz: the Albertinum (Tzschirnerplatz 2) on the north-west side and the Kurländer Palais (Tzschirnerplatz 3–5) on the south-east side. Both are under monument protection (see list of cultural monuments in old town I ).

The Albertinum dates back to a Renaissance building from the 16th century, which was redesigned into a museum building for the Dresden sculpture collection by 1889 according to plans by Adolph Canzler . After the renovation, the building was named in honor of the then reigning King Albert of Saxony and has also been the seat of the New Masters Gallery of the Dresden State Art Collections since 1965 . The main entrance to the Albertinum, however, is on the Brühl Gardens ; There is only one side exit at Tzschirnerplatz.

The Kurländer Palais was built for August Christoph von Wackerbarth in 1728/29 . It is named after the Duke of Courland , who owned the building from 1773 to 1796. After a renovation during this time, it was considered the most beautiful and elegant palace in the city. Later, the Surgical Medical Academy Dresden and the jazz club Tonne had their headquarters in the palace . Heavily destroyed in the air raids on Dresden in 1945 , it was considered the last old town war ruin before its reconstruction (2006-2008).

Other buildings in the immediate vicinity of Tzschirnerplatz are the police headquarters in the south-west, the court gardening facility in the north and a wing of the Reichsbank building in the far east.

traffic

Space plays a minor role for car traffic. The eastern approach to the Neumarkt area , which begins at Rathenauplatz , leads across Tzschirnerplatz . The next stop of the Dresden tram is only a few meters away at Rathenauplatz.

history

On the southeast side of the Albertinum on Tzschirnerplatz, a bronze plaque commemorates the beginning of the Dresden May Uprising in 1849.

The initially unnamed square was called Zeughausplatz from 1840 after the Dresden Zeughaus , the predecessor of the Albertinum. Nine years later, on May 3, 1849, the Dresden May Uprising began with the storming of the armory, which is now commemorated by a plaque on Tzschirnerplatz. In July 1946, the city council decided to erase the name of the square, which was reminiscent of the military, and to rename it Tzschirnerplatz. This happened in memory of Samuel Erdmann Tzschirner (1812–1870), lawyer and member of the Saxon provisional government during the events of 1849.
