Achim Mehlhorn (born February 22, 1939 in Rabenstein , Chemnitz district ) is a German chemist. From 1994 to 2003 he was rector of the Technical University of Dresden and from 2006 to 2010 he was president of the private Dresden International University .

Life

After graduating from high school, Mehlhorn studied chemistry at the TH / TU Dresden from 1957 to 1963 . He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at the TU Dresden until 1969 and did research in the field of semi-empirical quantum chemistry , among other things . In 1967 he published his A dissertation on experiments to calculate dipole moments of organic molecules using semi-empirical MO methods . From 1969 to 1992 Mehlhorn worked as a senior scientific assistant in the chemistry section of the TU Dresden and researched, among other things, on the application of quantum chemical methods to describe excited states. In 1979 he acquired the Facultas docendi for physical-organic chemistry.

In 1987 he received his B- PhD on the subject of quantum chemical investigations into the geometry and electronic structure of molecules in different electronic states , which was converted into a habilitation in 1990 . As a politically unaffected scientist, Mehlhorn belonged to the first freely elected senate of the TU Dresden from 1990 onwards. In 1992 Mehlhorn was appointed professor for special organic chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the TU Dresden. In the same year he was elected dean of the faculty and in 1994 the council elected rector of the TU Dresden. He succeeded Günther Landgraf . In 1997 and 2000 Mehlhorn was confirmed as rector. "Rector Mehlhorn is regarded as a diplomat who knew from the start how to mediate between East and West German professors as well as between natural scientists and humanities scholars". During his time as rector, the TU Dresden, which had just become a full university , was stabilized , the negotiations to merge the Saxon State Library with the university library to form the SLUB, and the development of molecular biology at the university. In the course of the recommendation of the Saxon University Development Commission in 2000, he signed the university contract, which meant the loss of the legal state examination course of the TU Dresden. In 2003, Hermann Kokenge was elected as his successor to the office of Rector.

From 1998 to 2000 Mehlhorn was chairman of the State University Conference Saxony. From 1999 he was spokesman for the TU / TH working group in the university rectors' conference for three years before becoming a member of the executive committee and vice-president of the HRK from 2001 to 2003. Here he was responsible for studies and examinations. From January 27, 2006, Mehlhorn was President of the private Dresden International University . He succeeded founding president Kurt Biedenkopf . On September 1, 2010, Hans Wiesmeth , Rector of the Leipzig Graduate School of Management from 2005 to 2010 , was Mehlhorn's successor. In May 2011, Mehlhorn was elected by the TU Dresden Senate as the new ombudsman for dealing with scientific misconduct .

Mehlhorn has been married since 1964. The marriage has two children.

Awards

Achim Mehlhorn was elected honorary senator of the TU Dresden in 2004 "because of his outstanding services to the TU Dresden". In 2005, he was awarded University of Breslau the honorary doctorate .

In 1995 he received the Heyrovský Medal .

Works (selection)

Achim Mehlhorn's main area of work is the investigation of problems associated with the application of quantum chemical methods in organic chemistry. Investigations in the 1960s were mainly concerned with theoretical investigations on organic sulfur compounds, from 1974 Mehlhorn also did research in the field of theoretical problems in photochemistry.
