Günther Landgraf

Günther Landgraf (born September 14, 1928 in Kriegern , Bohemia ; † January 12, 2006 in Dresden ) was a German professor of technical mechanics . Landgraf was the first freely elected rector of the Technical University of Dresden (1990–1994).

Life

Landgraf was born in Egerland and came to Dresden in 1938, where he studied physics at the TH Dresden from 1947 to 1952 . His diploma thesis was included in the notch stress theory of Prof. Heinz Neuber. From 1952 to 1961 he was a research assistant and senior assistant at the Institute for Technical Mechanics at the TU Dresden. In 1961, with a thesis on the theory of the rigid circular cylinder shell, taking into account the shear force distortion at the TU Dresden, he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD . His first activity took him to VEB Germania Chemieanlagen- und Apparatebau Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1961 . He completed his habilitation1969 with the topic calculation of arbitrarily loaded rotation shells with u. without considering the lateral shear distortions at the TU Dresden. In 1970 he received the facultas docendi at the TU Dresden; Shortly afterwards Landgraf was promoted to full Professor of Applied Mechanics (plasticity) appointed . His field of work was in particular the program systems for the design of rotary trays (ROSCHA system) and their industrial applications.

The election of Günter Landgraf in February 1990 as the first freely elected rector of the TU Dresden was the first visible sign of a new beginning at the university after the fall of the Wall in the GDR . He took over the office at a time when practically everything was in a state of upheaval and was also responsible for all processes relating to the renewal of the university. As rector, he was a partner of all progressive forces at the university. Landgraf had set up a round table , which was convened regularly from April 3, 1991 and at which current problems of renewal were discussed. In addition to representatives of the staff council and the student council, the State Representation of Academic Mittelbau Saxony (LAMS), the Federation of Freedom of Science (BFW) as well as the Association of University and Science (VHW) and the German University Association (DHV) took part. Günther Landgraf played a major role in the successful rebuilding of the Technical University of Dresden after 1989. Under his aegis, the TU Dresden received the status of a full university with 14 faculties. He held the rectorate until his retirement in 1994.

Since the European Institute for Postgraduate Education (EIPOS) was founded at the TU Dresden in 1991, Landgraf has been its president and, together with the scientific director and former prorector for education of the TU Dresden Günter Lehmann, has set standards in university and postgraduate further education. In addition, as an emeritus he was an employee of the Institute for Continuum Mechanics at the TU Dresden. Landgraf has supervised around 70 doctoral candidates, nine of his students are or were university teachers themselves.

Landgraf published around 100 scientific publications, including several books and brochures, patents and property rights. He was a member of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM).

Landgraf had been married to the artist Charlotte Sommer since 1953 . His grave (together with his wife Sommer-Landgraf) is in the Trinitatisfriedhof in Dresden. The common grave site is adorned by two sculptures by Sommer Landgraf: a figurative seated sculpture and a bust of Günther Landgraf.

Since September 2008, the former rector's building of the TU Dresden, an annex to the old canteen on Mommsenstrasse, has been called the "Günther-Landgraf-Bau".
