Johannes Freiherr von Campenhausen (* 1935 in Wehrda , Haunetal / Hessen) had been a lecturer for business informatics at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences since 1978 and led the German party from 1994 to mid-2001.

He held the title of professor until he retired. This did not result from a habilitation , but from his teaching activities and was therefore granted for a limited period.

In 1994 von Campenhausen was elected chairman of the German party . He took the chair without any particular political experience. With the German Party, he was primarily interested in properties in the east that were lost due to the war. Under his leadership, the party was also observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution because of its tendency to lay claim to the former German eastern territories . In the federal election in 1998, his candidacy in Lower Saxony failed. In an interview with the newspaper Junge Freiheit in 2000 he revealed his program: "We have all been trying to realize the conservative collection for a decade ...".

Von Campenhausen appeared in public less and less, until Heiner Kappel finally took over the party leadership. Johannes Freiherr von Campenhausen is now honorary chairman of the party. He withdrew from the party because it held talks with the NPD in 2004 in order to achieve political cooperation. This at times right-wing extremist development of the party was the reason, since he always saw himself as a democrat and committed to the Basic Law.
