The Schweizerhaus is a listed villa on the Burgberg in Erlangen .

History and description

The Schweizerhaus, 2006

The two-storey building was built in the Swiss style no later than the 1850s . On three sides of the upper floor there is a balcony that rests on cast iron supports. The roof is crowned by a turret covered with slate and a weather vane . The entire house has numerous wooden decorations typical of this architectural style. There are two basement floors below the property, the lower one with a barrel vault and air shafts .

Nothing is known about the builder and original owner. It is possible that this was a Nuremberg merchant who is said to have used it as a summer house with his wife in 1853. Some of the later owners and tenants lived in the house all year round. In 1883 associated stables, farm buildings and a gardener's apartment with an extension were named in the land register . The address Auf dem Berg 8 , which has been in use since 1875 , has been Burgbergstraße 106 since it was renamed in 1898 , although the outbuildings were given different house numbers.

From 1901 the Schweizerhaus was owned by the Nuremberg company Hoffmann & Ott, which also owned one of the then numerous quarries in Erlangen . In 1921, Captain Ludwig Wagner and his wife moved into the building. In 1947 their daughter took over the property. The house is still privately owned today.
