Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of Breastfeeding

The Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of Breastfeeding is a foundation supported by 16 organizations that advocates the use of breast milk and breastfeeding . The overriding purpose of the foundation is to create optimal conditions for mothers who are willing to breastfeed to enable and facilitate breastfeeding. In the foundation are u. a. Professional groups of midwives , breastfeeding and lactation consultants IBCLC, maternal consultants and doctors who also work on the foundation's tasks are represented.

In the opinion of the Foundation, a breastfeeding culture that is well anchored through customs , social behavior , values and knowledge improves both the living conditions of toddlers and their mothers and the general health of the population .

Main tasks

The main tasks of the foundation are:

  • Organization and coordination of the UNICEF award " Breastfeeding-friendly maternity hospital "
  • Launch of information campaigns
  • Supervision of the marketing of breast milk substitutes

Various campaigns aim to make the benefits of breast milk and breastfeeding better known to a broader public.

In addition, the foundation monitors compliance with the code of conduct on the marketing of infant formula , which seven out of eight Swiss manufacturers signed in 1982, through a joint committee (Codex Panel) with representatives of the manufacturers and the foundation .

The Codex states u. a. states that no infant formula may be delivered free of charge to maternity clinics, and that advertisements must draw attention to breastfeeding as the best nutrition for newborns and that breast milk may not be reduced.

The foundation was established in 2000 and continues the work carried out by the working group for the promotion of breastfeeding of the Swiss Committee for the United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF since 1992.

The foundation, based in Köniz ZH, is financed with operating contributions and project-related contributions, including the Swiss Red Cross, the Swiss Committee for UNICEF, the Federal Office of Public Health and the Professional Association of Swiss Breastfeeding and Lactation Consultants.
