Sword wars

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schwertkriege is a German-language browser game that went online as a hobby project in 2002, back then under the name TheCrown , and has been continuously developed since then. It was the first browser game to be played on a two-dimensional map. There are now over 100,000 registered accounts and at peak times more than 5,000 players were logged in at the same time.

The game

The game, which is set in the Middle Ages , revolves around a map made up of a multitude of square fields called provinces. Players gradually uncover the map by conquering neighboring provinces, where they also encounter other players . With these you can either ally or fight against them.

Sword Wars run partly in real time , partly turn-based . Units are trained and troop movements are carried out in real time. Battles take place every half hour on a turn-based basis.

There is no clearly defined goal of the game. Some players try to target certain regions, e.g. B. whole countries, to bring completely under their control. Others try to get as good a position as possible in the ranking . In contrast to many other browser games, in Sword Wars it is possible to completely conquer the lands of your enemies and thus defeat them once and for all.

A game round runs for about four months before it is ended and a new game round is started in which all players start over. So-called speed laps , which only last around a month, but run at a faster pace, are finished even faster . Registration and participation are free, paid premium accounts do not receive any gaming benefits.

history

After the end of 2000 with Galaxy Wars reached the first German browser game better known, different browser game projects have been started, but the relatively simple gameplay-oriented from Galaxy Wars: Players had only a single planet and the different planets were usually only in list form displayed and not in geographical structures. This is where the sword wars began: For the first time, a map was displayed in a browser game on which the individual provinces were placed in such a way that they had a local relationship to one another. Marching troops also moved on this map. Because of the technical limitations with the web technologies around PHP and MySQL at the time, this represented a considerable additional development effort and it therefore took some time until this principle was adopted by other browser games.

After a relatively high number of players could be reached by mid-2002, the free offer of the game had to be withdrawn and participation was only possible against payment of a fee. Since only a few hundred players were ready and since the operating costs for servers and network connections subsequently fell significantly, in 2003 the game was again offered completely free of charge.
